What's so great about local?

Today, most food from the grocery store travels thousands of miles to get there. This is extremely destructive to the environment, because of the fuel it takes to ship it. It also means your food isn't fresh. Ever notice how leafy greens from the grocery story only last a few days? It's because they were harvested weeks before you bought them. Our greens will last you up to two weeks in the fridge, because right before you picked them up, we picked them out of the ground.

"Each food item in a typical U.S. meal has traveled an average of 1,500 miles...If every U.S. citizen ate just one meal a week (any meal) composed of locally and organically raised meats and produce, we would reduce our country's oil consumption by over 1.1 million barrels of oil every week."

-Barbara Kingsolver in Animal, Vegetable, Miracle

What's so great about organic?

Today, more and more research is coming out, showing the benefits of organic farming and the detriments of non-organic farming.

Blenheim Organic Gardens is committed to preserving the beauty and diversity of our precious environment. Yes, it takes more work and more man- and woman-power. But it is absolutely worth it, because we believe nothing is more valuable than the life of humans, animals, and plants on this earth.
